Country music is a popular genre of music, to say the least. When asked to name some of their favorite songs, it is not uncommon to hear a person respond with Hank Williams Classics. Backed by one of the most popular names in the history of country music, Hank Williams Classics are the songs that have captured the hearts of countless country music fans.
Hank Williams Classics is a category consisting of many songs performed by the great one himself. One of the songs, “Honky Tonk Blues”, was and still is considered to be part of the Hank Williams Classics category. The song was actually number two on the Billboard charts when it was released in 1952. Some might even assume “Honky Tonk Blues” may have been the inspiration for the Rolling Stones song “Honky Tonk Woman.” While the songs do not contain many of same lyrics or a similar beat, the infamous feel of Hank Williams Classics seems to surround the tune of both the Rolling Stones' song and Hank's own “Honky Tonk Blues”. “Honky Tonk Blues” is available on the Hank Williams Classics CD, “20 Greatest Hits”, which was released in 1971 and then re-released again in 1997.
Another one of the Hank Williams Classics was released earlier in his career. In 1951, Hank Williams released “Hey Good Looking” which quickly climbed to the number one spot on the Billboard charts. “Hey Good Looking”, one of Williams more popular songs, is featured on an album that was released in 1994, along with eleven other Hank Williams Classics called “The Hits Vol. 1.” While songs like “Honky Tonk Blues” and “Hey Good Looking” were released during his lifetime, some Hank Williams Classics did not meet the public until after his death on January 1, 1953.
One of the Hank Williams Classics released throughout 1953 was the number one single, “Your Cheatin Heart.” In 1953, a total of three Hank Williams Classics reached the number one spot: “Your Cheatin Heart”, “Kaw-Liga” and “Take These Chains from my Heart.” Being considered a country music legacy made it no surprise that Hank Williams was one of the first three artists to ever be entered into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1961.
Hank Williams Classics are available as a collection on two CDs that are still available for purchase today. The Best of Hank Williams consist of two separate albums, “The Best of Hank Williams: The Millennium Collection” and “The Best of Hank Williams: 20th Century Masters The Millennium Collection Vol. 2.” “The Best of Hank Williams Vol. 1” was released in 1999 and contains twelve tracks including “Honky Tonk Blues” and “Hey Good Looking.” “The Best of Hank Williams Vol. 2” also contains twelve tracks including Hank Williams Classics like “Your Cheatin Heart” and “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.” “The Best of Hank Williams Vol. 2” was released on June 25, 2006.
Not many other country music songs have stood the test of time like the Hank Williams Classics have. Since his time in the limelight, many other artists have done popular remakes of some of the old Hank Williams Classics, enabling the popularity of such country music to live on through the ages. If anything should be said about Hank Williams Classics, it is that people may die, but legends live on forever.
